KAŠTELA

The City of Kaštela stretches over 17 km of beautiful Kaštela Bay. It is situated between Trogir and Split, in the heart of central Dalmatia.
It originated from the seven villages that have developed around fortresses built to defend against the Turks.
Above the town rises the mountain of Kozjak that the Croats first colonized as early as the 7th century. Today still standing couple of very old churches are to witness that.

KAŠTEL ŠTAFILIĆ

In 1508 Stjepan Stafileo, nobleman from Trogir, built his fortress on the ridge connected to the mainland with a bridge. The name comes from the Greek word staphille, which means grapes.
If you go streight down the street from our guesthouse, you will come to the never finished fort of noble family Lodi from the 16th century.
On the slopes of Kozjak are several churches - St. Nofar (with inscription that the reconstruction took place in 1475, which proves that the church was built much earlier), St. Martha (originaly built in the 9th century). From 9th till 10th century this was one of the most important places of Croatian history as a Kingdom. One of the most important documents of this place is the prince Trpimir grant from 852. in wich first time in the history of writing, is mentioned the name "Croat." We should also mention the church in Kastel Stafilic built in 1566, later rebuilt in Baroque style.
